FIRES IN NEW ZEALAND.

[United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Sunday. The general manager of the South British Insurance Office here, in an interview, stated that New Zealand 1 had never been a profitable field for ; insurance companies. In 1904, 1905, and 1906 they made losses amounting to £112,876; for 1907 he beleived the losses would total £500,000, and this year had started badly, as the Timaru and Christchurch fires would coat tho companies fully £300,000. If there was no improvement in the rates, and conditions did not alter for the better, he would not be surprised to see a number of the companies consider' the question of withdrawing altogethor from the Dominion. He said tho Fire Brigade legislation tbad increased the companies' burdens nearly ten per cent. i __
