SUMMARY OF BUSINESS.
COUNCIL. i WELLINGTON, Thursday. In the Council, which met at 2.30 p.m., the Land and Income Assessment Bill, from the House, was read a first time. The Hon. S. T. George resumed tha debate on the Fire Brigades Bill. The second reading was agreed to, and the bill was referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. The Police Offences Bill was committed, and after new clauses were added, to the effect that every person who commits an offence, and is liable to a fine not exceeding £20, who publicly uses in connection with his business or calling words, or initials, leading to the supposition contrary to the fact, that he holds a degree or diploma, or certificate of any University, or other institution, the burden of proof in any prosecution to fall upon the defendant. Regsitered medical practitioners using the title of doctor are exempt from this provision. The Bill was reported and the Council adjourned at 4.40 p.m.
