MAIN RO/D MAINTENANCE.
THE GANG SYSTEM. AN EXPERIMENT TO BE MADE AT WANGAMOA. At a meeting of tho Waimea County Council to-day Cr. Everett moved his motion that a permanent Kang of four men be employed on the main road from Nelson to the Pelorus Road Board's boundary, three of the gang to be paid 8s a day and the head ganger or overseer 9s a day. Cr. Everett said he would like to see the gang system tried as an experiment, ajid if successful it could be instituted on all the main roads in the County. Cr. Gill seconded, as it had been a "pel" scheme of his for a long time. The Council would, he was sure, be so satisfied with the experiment that next year they would have gangs all through the County. Cr. Beuke supported. Cr. Hoult did not think it wise to pay higher rates in Wangamoa than in other parts of the County, as it would lead to dissatisfaction, lie favoured paying the men 7s a day and tho overseer 8s a day. Cr, Everett pointed out that the Council was paying 8s a day in some parts of the County. Cr Macmahon supported, pointing out that the rates, with the subsidy, would be sufficient to meet the expense. The district was a self-supporting one. Cr. Everett said he was prepared to put on a gang of three men for 12 months, in preference to four for nine months, a point raised by Cr. Gill. The Chairman preferred to see a gang of four men. Cr. Beuke moved as an amendment and Cr. Hoult seconded, that a gang of two men and a overseer be put on. The amendment was lost, and the motion carried.
