CORRESPONDENCE.

THE NELSON" EDUCATION BOARD AND SUXDAV DESECRATION. To the Editor.

Sir,— l was surprised to see in your issue of Wednesday last that the members of the Nelson Education Board on their recent visit here, were driven around on Sunday to viuw the various beauty spots. Irrespectively of the religious aspect of the question, we might have expired a better example from a moral point of view from the members of the chief educational authorities in the Nelson province than to lend their influence in favour of a too-prevalent disregard of the most important day in Christendom. Ir aii ounce of example is worth a ton of precept, then the example of the Education Board careering the country on a Sunday in total disregard of the finer susceptibilities of others is an example that cannot be weighed by avoirdupois. The young people of to-day, as well as many of the elder, do not need much inducement to prostitute the day held most sacred by the list tor forces of the commnnity, and the influence of the Education Board ought nttt to be thrown into the balance against those striving to maintain its purity and its import. The action -was as undignified, as unwarranted, and coining from a body controlling the educ.ition of our youths. which constitutes more than the three R's, cannot but have a deteriorating influence, and mar the higher education for which most of us are working. As amongst those- who are striving to elevate the sentiments of the community, whoso tendencies are not always towards re finement, we have enough to contend aeainst without having to combat the influences of those whose assistance we ought to expect.

I am. etc., J. O. PRICE. Takaka, Sept, 28, '07.
