This was done, the Consul then demanding ..the disahmament of all soldiers at the -, Consulate. Accordingly the soldiers who fired at the .sailors were led in chains. The Consul warned the Bashaw that these would be shot if the ratiyes continued to threaten the vicinity*. The bombardment was then suspended, but resumed at the Bashaw's request, owing to the menacing attitude of the tribesmen in the outskirts. The melinite shells killed and wounded . hundreds. It is estimated that 400 were killed dvtmg the bombardment of aiid fighting at GaSa Blalica-.
