MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Nelson I Education Board was commenced yes- , terday. Present: Messrs A. T. Maginnitv (Chairman), Beuke Smith, Franklyn, Lock, Fair, Bailie. Shepherd. Mr Baigent was granted leave of ibsenee. Mr Beuke reported that he had authorised an expenditure of £9 at Lower Moutere. He was thanked, and his action was approved. Mr Beuke having reported favourably, it was resolved to expend £5 on a well and pump at Orinoco school, in place of the present tank. A report on the teachers's house at Upper Wakefield was submitted by Mr Smith, and adopted and the secretary was instructed to prepare plans, etc. Mr Cropp, of the Upper Wakefield School Committee, waited on the Board in reference to the matter. . The Board's application for a subsidy for agricultural classes was refused by the Government. 'The question of the removal of the Anatoko school was referred to Messrs Maginnity and Baigent. The question of a teacher's house at Orinoco came before the Board, and it was resolved that the matter remain in abeyance, and the Court be requested to report to the Board with reference to lodgings for the teacher. The Suburban North and Richmond Committee were authorised to call for and submit tenders for repairs and painting. Mr Wiliams, clerk, was granted a fortnight's leave of absence. Mr Corrigan waited on the Board and presented a petition from settlers o;> the Wangapeka' Estate, praying for a school, The request was agreed to and Mr Corrigan was authorised to expend £5 in preparing a room for an aided school.

The Treasurer's Statement showed the following balances : — General Account, Dr., £705 6s 6d ; Building Account, Cr., £1228 9s 3d. Grants ad-, vised £3600, less unliquidated votes' the following balances : — General Ac£4579, amount available £249; Contribution Deposits "Account, Cr., £134 5s 6d.

Applications from Committees were granted as follows -. — Kaituna, 30s, for gravelling ; Stoke, 25s for a new pump ; Ngatimoti, £4 15s for a kitchen range ; Spring Grove, £2 for repairs to house and veranda. Applications for teachersh.ips wero dealt with as follows :— Nelson Girls' School, pupi Iteacher (fivp applications), names of R. C Bell, Misses L. Horner, 0. Raikes, and 'K. Redgrave to be forwarded; Churchill (two applications), deferred for a month ; Sandy Bay, sole teacher, the Committee to be consulted as to the appointment of Miss Iris Scott; Charleston, pupil teacher, Committee to be consulted as ' to the appointment of Miss Mowatt; Leicester's Household, Miss Catherine Watson to be appointed. The Board adjourned at 4.15 p.m.
