The delay in commencing work at Normanby Bridge was referred to at the meeting of the Council last evening. The Mayor, in reply to a question, said he ha dnot heard from the contractor. The Town Clerk stated that the contract was let two months ago, and the work *was to be completed in five months. He had written to the contractor. The Mayor did not think they could expect the contractor yet, as he had to get a lot of material out from England. It would not take long to do the work when once a start was made. It-w as stated .that.' the contractor was advertising for a foreman' ior bridge work, and this was taken to indicate that a start would shortly be made with work at tf-eßriclge.

He then preseVited Mr Ward, on behalf of the Society, with a book as a small token of their appreciation. Mr Grant, President of the Society, endorsed all that Mr Garland had said, and he felt sure that the Society owed its success largely to Sir Ward's efforts. Mr H. Wood spoke of the good work done in the Sunday Afternoon Class by Mr Ward; and Mr E Webley also spoke in favour of the good moral character of Mr Ward and his efforts upon the younger members. Mr Ward having suitably acknowledged the presentation, the meeting closed with a hymn and a few words of prayer. Dr. Gibbs, in a letter read at last night's City Council meeting, dtew attention to the horse-drawn ambulance waggon in the Council's possession. Having recently to remove patients some distance, he had occasion to nee the waggon, and though it was better than an ordinary express, it fell far short of meeting the requirements of a sick or injured person. Dr Gibbs suggested that if the finances of the city precluded tha possibility of securing, at present a suitable ambulance waggon, at the least the present vehicle should be fitted with rubber tyres which could be fitted locally at small" expense. — The Council referred the matter to the Finance Committee. " Housewives who appreciate the value of economy and comfort in the kitchen will be interested in the famous "Champion" Ranges stocked by the Wilkins and Field Hardware Co., Ltd., Nelson. It is claimed that these ranges are the best bakers, greatest fuel savers, and most durable ranges made. So scientifically are "Champion" ranges constructed that every item of firing which enters the fuel box is utilised, and the heat therefrom distributed where required without the slightest waste. This being so, it is fairly obvious that the cost of a new range when it is a "Champion" is soon saved in thp fuel bill, to say nothing of the saving in cooking assui'ed. — The Wilkins and Field Hardware Co..
