There is lio surprise in the United ( States (says the New York corre»pon- ; dent of a London paper), that the defeat of tho United States Ship Subsidy Bill in tho lato Congress should have caused tho withdrawal of the Oceanic Steamship Company of its steamers now 1 engaged iii carrying mails by direct route from San Francisco to New Zealand and Australia. It is expected that hereafter the postal authorities of the United States will be forced to send mails to those countries by steamer sailing from Vancouver, and also by the more roundabout route, via Liverpool and London. This announcempiit only accentuates the disappointment felt by the Administration at the failure of the Bill, which was expected to stimulate through mail subsidies commerce between the United States and South America, as well as across the Pacific. A determined effort will bo made to forward this legislation next winter, and it is possible that the proposition may become one of the issues in the Presidential campaign next year.
