THE VOLUNTEERS.
H BATTERY. After the weekly parade of the H Battery last evening, a meeting of the Battery Bazaar Committee was held (Captain Madigan presiding), when the balance-sheet in connection with the recent bazaar was presented by the joint secretaries, ex-Captain Topliss and Corporal Spear, and it showed that after making provision for all liabilities tho Bazaar Committee would bo able to hande over to the H. Battery a sum of £200 towards the purchase of horses for the permanent use of the Battery. The result of the Bazaar was considered highly satisfactory, and it was unanimously resolved that hearty votes of thanks be accorded all who had assisted at the Bazaar. It was announced that the first prize in the Art Union had been won by Mr W. C. Cheel and the third prize by Miss Berry. It was also stated that the second prize, and six pictures were still unclaimed. At a meeting of the Battery held subsequently it was decided to entertain the stallholders and assistants at the Bazaar at a social and dance to be held in the Druids' Hall, and various subcommittees -.yere appointed to make the necessary arrangements for the function. Captain Madigan announced that Sergeant Brown had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant-Major vice Sergt.Major Brough, resigned. He intimated that it was the intention of the officers at a parade to be called at an early date, to submit ex-Sergeant-Major Brough for election as a lieutenant, and the announcement was received with applause. Reference was made to the splendid services Sergt.-Major Brough had rendered the Battery, while acting in the capacity of Sergeant-Major. A letter was received from Mr W. R. Ancell asking the Battery to accept as a gift a veterinary medicine clfest. The offer was received with* thanks, the motion being carried by acclamation. Captain Madigan said the medi-cine-chest was a useful and acceptable present, and one which members of the battery appreciated very highly. It was stated that Staff-Sergt.-Major Wilson, R.A., would visit Nelson in September to instruct members prior to the annual training camp, which would probably be held in November.
