WELLINGTON, Monday. A cable from the High Commissioner dated London j 29th inst., says : — The mutton market is weak owing to Eor demand. Existing stocks are eavy and widely distributed Amongst agents, who are pushing sales. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 3Jd North Island 3 3-5 d per lb. The lamb market is firm, stocks are heavy, and there is a good demand for all ciasres. The ayI erage price for light weights is : CanterI bury brands s|d ; other than Canterbury s|d ; heavy weights, Canterbury, s£d omer, 4|d. The beef market is steady, owing to good demand. The average price is 3|d and 2j}d for hind and fore quarters respectively. The butter market is slightly weaker, wtih less demand. Choice New Zealand brands are quoted at 975 ; Argentine 95s Siberian 91s ; Danish 101s. The cheese market is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker, buyers holding back expecting prices to go lower. The current quotation is 625. There is small business doing in the hemp market, and prices are weak. Good fair grade on spot is quoted at £33 10s, and April-June shipment £33 ; fair current Manilla on spot is quoted at £37. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet, and there are only light stocks on hand ; 171 b. bright, clean seed is quoted at 52s per cwt. _ The Now Zealand wheat market is firm, with a hardening tendency. The New Zealand oats market is active, with a good demand. The New Zealand beans market is quiet ; the New Zealand peas market is linn, with the demand only moderate. The kauri gum market is quiet, but steady, and tho stock on hand is mod- ' crate, ordinary to fair three-quarter I scraped, 140s per cwt. ; fair, half-scrap-ed, 90s ; brown, fair, half to throequarter scraped, 81s ; picking, common to good, 45s bush, fair to gcod, pale and amber, scraped, 105s.
