Y. M. C. A.
PROGRESS OF THE NELSON BRANCH.
Since the opening ceremony last Thursday the V.M.C.A. rooms have been well attended. The bagatelle board has proved a source of great amusement, and if its attractiveness continues the Board of Management will have to seriously consider invesjjng in another board. The question of Duying a piano is now under consideration, and until permanent arrangements are made for either an organ or a piano ono of the members of the Board has kindly lent a small organ. On Friday the Board met to discuss the proposed scheme of joining with the Institute in erecting a building, and decided to meet the deputation on Monday next, 29th inst. Yesterday, despite the elements, was a highly successful day. In the morning at 10 o'clock the devotional meeting led by Mr W. S. Strong was well attended. In the afternoon about 40 young men assembled to hear an address from the Rev. H. Blamires, who is conducting a mission to young people at St. John's church. Mr Blamires was listened to most earnestly, and at the close of his remarks a hearty vote of thanks was carried by acclamation for the stirring and instructive halfhour's talk he had given. Immediately afterwards a business meeting was held, when it was decided to appoint Mr S. P. Lang (who carried out the duties for the afternoon as chairman) as leader of the class. A committee of six for the ensuing year was set up to arrange the syllabus, etc. Mr C. IC. Ward was appointed secretary to the class. Mr AY. S. Strong, of the China Inland Mission, who is in Nelson on furlough, has consented to deliver an address next Sunday. To show the progress the Association is making, it may be stated that the membership is now well over 140. The Executive is anxious to secure as many -nore as possible, as the more members '.here are the better the Association can '*>c run. The gymnasium which opens on Tuesday night at All Saints' (as will be *;een in our advertising columns) has 'very prospect of being run successful'y, and the same applies to the literary md debating society, which also holds a ousiness meeting the same night. It is desired to add as many books as possible to the library, and any persons willing to give assistance in this direction are requested to communicate with Mr H. A. Hobbs.
