DISTRICT NEWS. Richmond.

MISSION AND RECITAL.

1 The Rev. H. L. Blamires (the Organising Secretary of the Bible Class Movement in connection with the Methodist Church) commenced a mission in the Richmond Methodist Church on Sunday aftfernoon last, when he addressed a goodly number of Sunday Scholars and others. In the evening there was an exjcellenfc congregation considering the state of the weather, and the preacher was listened to with dee pattention. On Monday evening Mr Blamires went off the usual mission lines and gave a Recital entitled "Wit and Wisdom of Methodist Preachers." Mr H. Buttle occupied the chair, and in a happy manner introduced the speaker. In opening the Recital illustrations were given of the wit of other than Methodist preachers— Sturgeon, Parker, ond others being quoted. A good story concerning a Scottish Jubilee told by Rev. J. K. Elliott, of Wellington, was also recounted. The Missioner then went on much to the delight of his hearers to give instances of John Wesley's quick wit — the story of his encounter with Beau Nash being much appreciated. i Instances of the wit of some of the early Methodist preachers were excelj lently given such as Billy Smith's cure [ for a dying wife, which" story, was greeted with loud laughter. In examples of modern Methodist wit Peter Mackenzie and W. LT. Watkinson were found to be names to conjure with. Several examples of colonial humour were also given with telling effect. | Altogether the large audience felt at i the close of the evening that they had "had a good time," and Mr S. Fittall voiced the happy feelings of those present in proposing a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Blamires. During an interval Miss Kingsland sang with good effect the "Dream of Paradise." As the meetings went on they inincreased in interest and attendance. On Sunday Mr Blamires commences mission services at St. John's Methodist Church, Nelson.
