! .Mr G. Fowlds, Minister of Education, visited Cheviot yesterday. In the evening he delivered an address in the Public Hall, when there was a large attendance. . Mr Fowlds dealt- at length witii t(ie Laild Bill,, and pt the. conclusion of .the address ih& following resolution was 1 proposed ty Mr G. W. Forbes: — "That this meeting of. Cheviot settlers accord a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Fowlds for his interesting and statesmanlike address, expresses confidence in the sGovernment, and approves of their land proposals as embodied in the Land Bill." Mr T. Gee moved the following amendment : — "That this meeting thanks Mr Fowlds for his address, but is of opinion that no Land Bill will be satisfactory unless it contains a system of optional tenure,". Mr Forbes' motion was declared carried by 12 votes. The Minister was subseqUSlitly entertained at supper. To-day Be inspected the School, aild drove to Port Robinson. I DUNEDIN, Thursday. The Acting-Premier, Mr W. Hall- • Jones, turned the first sod of the Gore artd Waikapa railway to-day, in the presence of a large gathering of residents of the district. The Minister, in tjie course, of a speech, stated that he had received intimation that the £50.000 necessary for tlie 'constructior of the line had been" paid inio thf Public Works Fund the previous day. The Minister was afterwards entertain ed at a luncheon, at which districl M.'sH.R. were .present. He left Oor< for Diinedih by a special train at J o'clock.
