THE BESSES O' TH' BARN BAND.

The NELSON SEASON. OPEN-AIR CONCERT ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. tn order that people residing at a distance may have due notice of their decision, Messrs j. and N. Tait announce to-day that they have decided to give one open-air concert . by. the Besses o' th' Barii Band in Trafalgar Park on Wednesday afternoon, from 2.30, to 4.3 Q. The announcement will be received with much satisfaction, aiid, given favourable weather conditions, one of the, largest crowds ever seen in the Park should be present. As to the question of the rental under which tho Park was let to Messrs Tait, the latter of course feel that the Council's action in making a differential tariff if the admission charges exceeded ls, is hardly reasonable, because if the Council decide to charge a rental it should make no difference whether is or 20s admission is charged by the lessee. It looks too much like dictating to the management what (hey must do. As a matter of fact, Mr Tait informed us that tho expenses of the tollr are enormous, afld it is absolutely necessary for them to charge a little moro than is usual for a small local affair. The terms the Council has imposed should, as mentioned in our leading article on Saturday, be rescinded, and if necessary, the grounds should rather be offered the management free, as the public, we are certain, are desirous of recognising the merits of the Band. How would it do if the Messrs Tait eventually decide for the great contralto, Madame Clara Butt, to appear in Nelson, and "simply because necessity compels them to charge at least 10s 6d for the seats, the proprietor of the Theatre raised his rental from, say, £5 to £20? It plainly means tbat such action would result in desirable attractions being excluded from visiting Nelson. Regarding the admission charges for the open air concert they have pot yet been fixed, but it is almost certain that they will bels 6d lip the ground and ls extra to the stalftl and enclosure. It is to be hoped that the Mayor will declare Wednesday afternoon a full half-holiday, so that all may have the opportunity of hearing the Besses in tho open air. The Besses arrive by the Penguin tomorrow morning, and give the first matinee at the Theatre at 2.30, when "special matinee prices, 3s and 2s, will be charged, and children admitted at half rales. By universal request, " Lead Kindly Light" is to be played at the matinee. Tho sgtond recital will be given the 6ame evening at the Theatre. On Wednesday, as beforo stated, the Band will play in the open air, and conclude the season on Wednesday night in the Theatre. Tickets for lh9 Theatre concerts (5s and 3s) are to be obtained at Jackson's, and tickots for tbe openair concert will be obtainable from 10.30 to-morrow. Very suitable train arrangements have been made in connection with the Band performances to-morrow and Wednesday. According to the tram arransoments excellent opportunities are available for all who are desirous of hearing the Band. Country residents between Tadmor and Nelson will be able to attend the concerts both afternoons, and return home the same evening, while on Tuesday a late traiii is laid on for residents between Nelson and Belgrove — which would be altogether too late for residents of the Tadmor district. Cheap holiday fares will be in force, so there appears to be nothing more required, so far as railway arrangements are concerned.
