The Auckland Orchestral Society, which gave its first conceit at the Exhibition last evening, achieved a signal succos 3 , bpth instrumentalists and soloist, MaJame Wiclaert winning golden opinions for their artistic pciionnance. There was a very large attendance. The Erhibiti. n Orchestra was enthusiastically greeted by a crowded audience yesterday, and the attendances at its performances grow larger as the time for its temporary departure from ' Christcburch draws ntar. The Besses o' th 1 Barn Band played a very attractive programme on the Sports Ground la?t night, and again this afternoon, large attendances being present on each occaEion. The Band will give its final concert : of the present season on the SportJ Ground to-morrow night, when the Governor will be present, and speoial items will bo played at his request. An exceptionally fine display of Pain's London fireworks will be given in conjunction with the Band's performance. ' ;-. I To-day the Exhibition has beeri well attended. The Health Department's exhibit, the preparation of which has been delayed till now by the late arrival <f many articles, is now practically completed. Articles were secured for exhibition purposes by Dr Valentine and Inspector Middleton during their recent visit to England, and though ail the objects promised have not come to I hand, sufficient have arrived to enable a .very interesting and highly educative display ib Jje made. The principal exhibit is an ambulance brougham manu- ' facturod by a London firm, which re- 1 sembles in arpearance. an ordinary closed carriage, but contains every up-to-date apparatus and convenience for dealing with cases. . All'sorts of details are provided for, including a speaking tube to the driver. ■ A method of construction has been adopted which i enables the whole vehicle to be disinfected easily, and the carriage can be used aa well for fever cases as for accident?. Another prominent exhibit is a disinfector to be installed in tie Christchurch Consumption Stnitorium. This Court also contains models of sewage and drainage -apparatus and sanitary appliances, including a number of small poi table disinfectors for rooms, schoolhouses, etc. Six hundred entries have been re ceived for the New Zealand Athletic Union's sports meet.ng on Thursdaj and Saturday next. For the New Zealand Exhibition Championship of 133 yards there will be forty Bt3iters,3vhich is eaid to be a record number for the Colony for a flat race of the kind. The value of the first prize, £40. is also said tjbea record for such an event. The Southland Pipe Band arrived to-night 10 take part in the Pipe Band Contest in connection with the meeting, and the Oauiaru,' Timavu, and VVaitara Pipe Binds are expectad to arrive toj morrow. The quickstep competilion will be decided on Thursday af tonioon, and the selection contest on Thursday uighfc. The judgts for the Pipe Baud Competition are Messrs Struan Kobertson (Christchurch), C Stuneck(Chris.tchurch), and T. Milne (Curow), and for the military contests Captains Foncis and Salter.
