A PROPOSED 'MEMORIAL. NEW PLYMOUTH. Monday. A, public meeting was held tonight, and presided over by tha Mayor, when 'it resolved that a suitable memorial ibe erected on Marsland. Hill to tih-o memory of the Imperial ' amd Colonial troops who fought and, died during tho Maori War in Taranuki. Marsland Hill, overlooking tho town, was formerly the, site of "the barracks, and of the refugees' camp. A speaker at the "meeting; re-called tho fact that Ithi; first Volunteer soldier in the Empiro -who fell in .battle 'was Trooper John Surtor>, who was shot dead at the t Waitara iby tho rebel Maoris. A strong committee, niclud-ing th- Mayor, Captain Stan-, dish. Colonel 'Messenger, Colonel Ellis, .Co-loned Okey, Colonel Oolhns, Colonel jWatt, Captain Price, 'Sir W. Russell, a nd a number of old identities and old soldiers was set up to further tho scheme. A considerable sum is already promised by- the old officers
