BARNDOOR TOWLS V. PUREBRED.

S-ir,—l have allowed severai articles to 'go (unanswered re purebred versus mongrel fowls, and when ' I can find time I may answer 'somo of them ; but in tho meantime, I send you 'by a friend going to Nelson some oggs to show you, and -anyone who may take- the trouble of looking at them, the 'folly of changing tho mongrels (from a practical- point of view) for one breed of purebreds, ' Tho eggs wero laid by; pullets of the same ago. Any fancier will know that the dark egiga have come from a much lauded breed, and I can add were laid 'by| pullets I purchased in 'Nelson thati were guaranteed -to bo of a good laying strain, '.and according to my' opij»ion tho eggs aro too small to sell ; and the .pullets 'lay only eight to 12 eggs and then sit, and then do 'not lay again for four or five weeks. Tihe mongrel eggs; (white) were taken out of a nest on 'Monday* and .(as you can sue), wero not picked. I could have sent you all largo ones, and to make the yifference more marked I may add that the mongrels layi for four or fiv« or six 'weeks before wanting to sit. in throe or four 'days, go off their brood, fit, and are laying again in a fortnight] after. I have a cross with ar.crt.foer. pure breed, that are only kept by me "to hatch mongrels, as they lay , small eggs, and few, alj have boen ■ sold except a fow hens to hatch, whilst the mongrels are laying. By tho by, ' perhaps "Buff" -will ba good enough to inform me if hens that have beon hatched in an incubator lay as well as those hatched in 'the lordi-nary way. I havo heard that they do not, but oajvnot. understand why. 1 I am, etc., ENQUIRER. A dozen eggs, six from thoroughbred Silver Wyandottes and six from common 'barn door fowls, have been left at ;this office ' by our correspondent for inspection. The pure-bred eggs are 'brown and small, and while the "mongrel " eggs are white and larg«. Anyone interested may sco tho eggs at this office during the next day or two. It may 'be stated that the eggs aro unfertilised.—Ed. N.F..JU.)
