LOCAL & GENERAL NEWS.

An unusual visior to the Harbour this morning was an enormous sea lion, about 12ft long, and with a spread across his flippers of between four and five feet. He came into tho new entrance. Ho seemed dazed and as if he had been hurt about tho head, probably having been foul of some steamer's propellor, as his head bears marks of injuries. His swimming is not like a strong ahd healthy animal, and he remains up only long enough to draw a good breath, then slowly sinks again, — not a dive as he would in good health make. He must be a visitor from some of the distant Sounds, as seals are the only inhabitants of the kind on the islands near our coast. The creature was so inert that Mr Johnson, one of the Harbour Board staff, was able to pull alongside of it in a dinghey, and stroked it with a paddle. It is now in the vicinity of the Fifeshire Rock. During November, 21 births, 11 deaths, and 8 marriages were registered at Nelson. Tho Rev. Grattan Guittess will con duct the evening service in the Congregational Church to-morrow, Messrs C. J. Harley and W. Townsend, Mayoi of Mirimar, was present throughout the sitting of the City Council, having beer accommodated with a seat inside the bar. Mr Piper, Mayor of Nelson, expressed his pleasure at meeting Mr Town send, and the visiting Mayor suitably acknowledged the greeting. The Rev. W. S. Lucas, who has beer suffering from a severe attack of in. fluenza, and has been laid aside for a month or more, has now been sufficiently restored to health to be able to res" nl s, his duties, and he will preach at All Saints' Church to-morrow. The business at the meeting of the City Council last evening was transacted in less than an hour and a half— quite a change from what has been customary for a considerable period. t Th , e S , was a Iar 8 e attendance at the Loyal Nelson Lodge, 1.0.G.T., last evensng, when a pleasant social was held.
