Speaking at the reception he referred to the illness of Colonel Pitt, and expressed the hope that the serious operation he was undergoing that afternoon at Christchurch would be successful. Afterwards Sir Joseph Ward received a wire stating that the operation had been successfully performed, arid the patient was progressing favourabltf.
