HIS APPEARANCE AT THE HUTT A HOAXv For some weeks past many residents of the Hutt, especially ladies, have been living in a state of terror owing to the reported appearance in their Tjnidst of an individual that had been causing some stir in other parts of the colony by dressing himself in some unearthly costume plastered with phosphorus, and having on his breast the de. Sign of a coffin with the words-, "Prepare to meet, ybUr doom" brilliantly lighted by electricity. The ynili haS been spread throughout the . whole district by one or two evil-disposed persons that such an individual had been • seen by fhem, and some of the daily papers have lent a hantt in giving credence to the statements thus made. Al Representative of this journal (the "Hutt and ketone Chronicle") has been busily engaged for some ■ days past investigating the alleged } scares. First of aU a young man going home to the KorpfcorQ was supposed to havo «can .sataaetMng similar to the iVaHM. dutlinea above ; but investig-ajtions proved that there was no truth whatever ih this statement. .An old white cow that certainly ought to have been in her coffin many years agoand fer less, harmless -than the peiv son she frightenetl. was the cause df thai bit of trouble ; but of course she was white. and the moon was shining on her hide, and after having been told about "Phosphorus Jack " a few minutes before, was it not reasonable to imagine that it might be that notorious individual? There is an old saying '•'murder will out !" The old cow was credited with saying "prepare to meet your God," while "Phosphorus Jack" in every other instance has been reported with having the inscription "Prepare" to meet your doom '"blazoned forth with electrical effect. Of course the phrase may have been varied for the special benefit of the Korokori'te.
