The Chief Surveyor of Wcstland (Mr Ci. J. Roberts.) has just completed the task of surveying and preparing for the market a number of blocks of land with a total area of 22,000 acres, which will be placed on tho market within a few weeks for settlement. He is of opinion thatMf Westland as a province for settlement wore as well boomed as some of the North Island districts there would be something of a rush for the new blocks, which are suitable for dairying .purposes. Even as it is, thc new areas will find settlers, Lack of bridges over the big rivers kept back settlement, but this drawback was now being remedied by the erection of one important bridge and the early erection of another. Mr Roberts reports that the dairying industry is taking on and forging ahead along the West Coast, and the Westlanders are realising its possibilities. There is also the promise of a big tourist traflic in the near future, when the. glacial and tnountiiiii and forest beauties of West land become better known. There appears to be some diflieulty in regard to the recognition of the New Zealand M.A. degree at Edinburgh as entitling a student to go forward to a higher degree, for which the M.A. degree is a necessary preliminary.! A letter from Edinburgh describes the New Zealakd degree ns "not a strong qualification for a course of higher study, but a minimum qualification for admission to it." A New Zeatanri M.A. (with honours) in communicating these facts to the Somite strongly urges an enlargement of the curriculum for honours in i M.A.. at least in literary subjects, so 'as to secure for the degree unquestioned recognition for purposes as above mentioned.
