FORTNIGHTLY MEETING-. The fortuightly meeting of the Nelson City Council was held last evening. There were present : The Mayor (Mr H. J3aigent)> Crs. Akersten, Haggitt, Harrison y Mercen Neale, Orsruan, Faircy, Ligbtband, and Hudson. . • ■ " An apology for Absence was i^ceived from Cr Webley. Dane in Hardy Street, and found the building to bo in no way unfit for occupation and dangerous to health . During the last month and since the District Health Officer inspected the buildings, considerable alterations and improvements have been made. The letter was referred to tho Health Ofilcer. REPOBTtf. This had been rectified, and the snpply was now satisfactory. It was decided after discussion to inquire re a second hand stone crushing machine. It was stated by the. Mayor that the present machine had dost & considerable aniount for repajra, and he thought another machine should be procured. Eesolvedthat the Engineer carry out his suggestions re, the work in Weka-st Eesolved that the work on the Bocks roads bo proceeded with. , Eesolved that in connection with this work carts be employed by the day instead of by the load. I ho report was then adopted; The Inspector of IJuisances reported that JJI4 7s Id.of scavenging fees had been collected during the fortnight. One case, of infectious disease (scarlet fever) had been reported since the last meeting of the Council. 6 The Abattoir Inspector reported that during the fortnight thbre had been slaughtered 66 cattle, 610 sheep. 871 amb s> 9 calves, 46 pigs— total 827. ■■'■-. Miscellaneous. The matter of -the Maitai banks survey was referred to the Finance Committee. Th<» Mayor, who attended the Municipal Conference, submitted re-« solutions passed by the Municipal Conference. The Mayor said that while at Wellington, he; went oh to Mnsterton and inspected the drainage works there. He also saw Mr Mestaycr ro drainage, and thought tho Council should fix on a day for holding a meeting re the drainage scheme.

. ; } It was resolved to hold a special meeting re this matter on Thursday evening next. Cr Akersten thought something should be done to the Rocks Raad embankment. He moved that the Works Committee visit the spot and see the improvements necessarySome parts of the road was extremely dangerous, and not sufe iVf vehicular traffic. The accident I to Mr A. Trask was a narrow escape from death, and the speaker predicted that there would be a serious accident there some day. Cr Neale said there was too much danger on the road, and he advocated closing the road until it is made safe.
