Stead has his first chapter on " The Money Kings of the World," and Cleveland Moffett writes interestingly on the surgery of light, referring especially to Professor Finsen's new healing rays. S. R. Crockett continues his story " Strong Mac," and Baroness Orcyz begins a sensational series, "SkinO'My Tooth." Other contributions of interest are : " A Matter of Kindness," F. M. White ; " Portraits— While You Wait," Ethel Turner ; " The Makings of a Flume," C. Fell Smith ; "The Tame Fish of Logan," S. R. Lewison ; " The Vigo's Captains," Alice Munro ; "The New Khaitoum," John Ward ; " A Little Misunderstanding," S. I/. Hughes. The number is profusely illustrated and quite up to the standard of its predecessors. Mr Cecil Armstrong, M.A., formerly of Nelson, nowjof Kentucky, U.S.A., sends us a beautifully printed list of the faculties and graduating classes of the Kentucky University at Lexington and the programme of the Commemoration (June Rth to 11th). Mr Armstrong's name appears in the class roll of the College of Liberal Arts as one of the alumini (Master of Arts). All aro pleased to hear of an old Nelsoman's success in study or in life. We have received a small book of 54 pages, illustrated, issued by the Christchurch Meat Co., Ltd., entitled " Islington Fertilizers. It contains several short quotations and axioms instructing the stock raiser, and also short essays on " Hoy much Manura " ; " Learning how to buy Fertilizers " ; " Ammonia " ; " Superphosphates " ; " Potass ie Manures " ; ,' Bacteria in the Soil " ; " Plant Food and Indications " ; " Something from Nothing"; " Selling Fertility "; "The Land a Savings BanK " ; etc. The facsimiles of the brands and grades for frozen mutton and lamb adopted at Islington and Smithfield are interesting to the freezer of fat stock. The detailed statement of the various parts in pounds which make up the live weight of cattle, sheep and pigs is instructive. As the buying of sheep and lambs by the pound over all is bfcomiug general, the handy ready reckoner will be found very useful. The gestation of stock, with tables of . dates for lambing-, calving, etc., will be acceptable as a reference. An article by Mr James Long, England, giving the results achieved in Belgium on its small farms is interesting reading. The Company will post a copy to any farmer on application. Mr. Henry Cock and his son, who have been on an extended, tour of the Continent, returned to Nelson this morning. Mr Cock is iv good health, and will be welcomed back to the city by a large circle of friends. The Mayor (Mr H. Baigent) returned to Nelson this morning from Welington, where he attended the Municipal Association Conference. A very large and enthusiastic audience gathered a the Spring Grove Schoolroom last night to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Harold E li , who are leaving the district. Mr Ellis, who has been headmaster of the Spring Grove school for about eight and a-half years, has received the appointment of the school at Wairengahika, near Gisborne. The gathering took the form of a concert and dance, the chair being taken by Mr E. Cowles. The pleasing 1 feature of the evening was the presentation by M. Fowler, on . fcehal of the scholars, of an, address expressing their regret at kming their teacher, and wishing him every prosperity in his now sphere. The address was accompanied by a handsome present. Mr W. Lock, a member of the Education Board, acting on behalf of the residents of Spring Grove, also presented Mr and Mrs Ellis with a set of silver serviette rings, a jam dish, and a pair of jam spoons. In making the presentation Mr Lock referred to the excellent way the Spring Grove school had been conducted and the very good results achieved. A variod programme of vocal and instrumental music was gone through, contributed by the following ladies and gentlemen : — Mis3os Knapp (2), Rutherford, Avery, Price> Messrs Ellis, Price, Lock, and Hbult, and several choruses wero rendered by the school children. After the concert tho hall was cleared for dancing, the music being provided by Miss Fowler. Mr Ellis, who has been a sergeant in the Bearer Corps for some time, was farewelled by his comrades, at a dance at Wakefield last Friday night. The Forest Lodge of Freemasons is also losing a prominent member, Mr Ellis being the Worshipful Master, and very general regret was expressed at his departure at the last meeting. Mr and Mrs Ellis will be greatly missed in the musical circles of the district. Toririorrow at 11 a.m. at their salerooms Messrs W. Rout & Sous will sell poultry from good strains on account Mr S. Messrs Bisley Bros & Co. will hold an unreserved auction sale of general, drapery, grocery, ironmongery, etc., at Motueka on Thursday and Friday next, 23rd and 14th insjbant, at 10.30. The goods are now on view 1151 the rooms, High-st, Motueka, next to the Motueka Hotel. Luncheon will be provided, Mr Lock reports a very large attendance at the auction salvage sale of drapery, groceries, etc, in Wm. Wilkie's eetale.
