K correspondent of the "Otago Daily Times" writes :-" .One does Jinps not expect to see six small River The first suggestion was that the hotelkeeper had a particularly healthy family-not that six is an abnormal number lor a lamily but at least, four were of. the same a Xe We were told they were strikers, but their youthful appearance discounted the suggestion that lihey formed a labour organisation, and there was no blacksmith's forge near. It appealed, however, that they 'did form a labour organisation In a shearing shed a number of boys are required as ' pickers -up of the wool as it is shcrp, and appear to be as necessary vto the shearer as his shears. The Wages affered to tyiem was 12s 6d a week, and the boys concluded that that sum was not sufficient remuneration for their services. They therefore intimated their determination that if the wages were not 4 riz' they would hot • pick-up.' The runholder was? obdurate, and so were fihe boys, and they left the shed. The result was that the shearers could riot commence their labours, and the runholder was at his wits' end. How this youthful strike will end the future only will show." The introduction of agricultural instruction into the curriculum., pf the Warrnambool State School '(Victoria) based on demonstrations from nature, undertaken by . tLe : boys, "themselves ,- has been attended by -very successful results. About six months ago a certain proportion of the sphool ground iVa's set apart for conducting experiments in the j.roduction of cereal creps, fodder plants, grasses and vegetables. Ihe area was neatly fenced by the senior boys, and subdivided into a considerable number of pits. Artificial manures in the farm of guano and bonedust were used in some of the sections, whilst others were left in a natural state, the object being to demonstrate the benefits derived from a judicious use of fertilisers. A cablegram received last week stated that the Ciovernment of Nicaragua had declined to negotiate while the Washington authorities are negotiating with Colombia for ihe canal r«ute. Referring to the canal route, a leading New York newspaper states :— For years past the Colombian Government has professed to be eager for the United States to purchase and complete the unfinished ditch of the French Company. This country has been given to understand that every facility will be offered to it for the prompt, completion of the canal on the most liberal terms. But now that it is ready and eager to begin tho work Colombia seems inclined to temporise and to ask impossible conditions. There does not seem to be the slightest justification for tho reported attempt to increase the rentul price. It is understood tjhat Colombia was willing to accept a certain price a year or two ago, when it was not certain that tho United States would want to build at Panama. Nothing has occurred since that to make the concession more valuable. The Panama route is not the only one. There is another at Nicaragua, which has seme advantages over that at Panama, and which we can havei for tihe asking. The President is as fully authorised to accept and adopt it as; he is to conclude arrangements with Colombia, and if he should do so that wonld mean an ending cf tihe Panama Canal. Whichever route this country adepts will thenceforth be the only one. Colombia cannot afford to run any unnecessary risk of being left in the lurch for ever.
