Bedford, and Thos* McKenz ■--, M's.II.R., jointing out in conne tion with petitions being lodged in the South to upset licensing polls, thai fhe returning officers have no funds to pay counsel, and that it is doubhtful if any other party can oppose the petitions, and suggesting; that the Crown should instruct counsel to appear for these officers. The Premier has replied that these representations have been referred to the Colonial Secretary for consideration, but the Premier's) Ilieilior is that the Legislature has provided for all expenses respecting jetitioiis being defrayed by the local authorities. Mr Seddon says that returning officers, being statutory officers, interference hy the Government] unsolicited hy them, but asked for by interested parties on either side would form a dangerous precedent..
