AG'iVIX ON THE BERTH. Tho s.s. Charles Edward, ivhich has been undergoing extensive alterations by the Anchor Foundry since the beginning ot the year, is now ready for sea, aud sails for We'iington to-night. Her eartyina capacity has been increased considerably by the removal of the saloon, ivhich is noiv on deck amidships under tho bridge, where also are tho ladies' cabin and ollicers' quarters. Her cutwater has been replaced by a straight stem, and it is noiv impossible to recognise the graceful and trim " Charlie '' of yore. She has been supplied ivitli a neiv boiler imported from Homo, but ivhich was pub together at the Anchor Foundry. Two large water ballast tanks have been built. The alterations have been carried out under the superintendence of Mr A, Bro u p n manager of the Anchor Foundry, the carpentering has been executed by Scott's Trustees, the painting by Sir J. P, Cool;e. nnd the upholstering by Messrs ] Page and Sons. Captain Wildman, formerly of the Kennedy, will have command of the Chailes Edivard, with Mr "Watson chief mate, and Mr i. Broivn chief engineer. She steamed to the mooring posts this morning, and hud her compasses adjusted.
