General Metbuen officially reports that he defeated 8000 Boers at the Modder Kiv^ronTneadaylast.afterdespfratefigbt' "-"IT lasting 10 hours. He says it was one of th? hardest and most trying fighti in the annals of the Britieh army. The Boers were strongly entrenehed with a number of heavy gnus and enflankintr was impossible. The British artillery and the Naval Briga*e especially distinguished tbemselves. General Gataacre has arrived at Bushman's Ho:k, en route toColesburg.
