PENAL SERVITUDE AND THE LASH, [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, November 22. At the Supreme Court, before Mr J ustice Edwards, a young man named W. H. Jobaon was convicted of attempting to assault two little girls, and tbe jury recommended that severe corporal punishment be ordered in addition to the sentence. His Honor enitrely concurred with the jury's recommendation, and said it was imposi3ible that in the annals of crime there could be a worse case of this description. It was necessary to detor aumlar evil-doers by rilling them with lear for their own bodies. On the first charge he sentenced the prisoner to seven years' hard labour, and ordered that he receive fifty lashea with the cat-o ninetails, to be administered twenty-five at a time. On the other charge prisoner was sentenced to five years, the sentence to be concurrent with the other.
