The American naval authorities have purcchased four steamers of the Beaver line for cruisers. The American Government has oflioially announced that it will not resort to privateering. . Britain is pressing Spain to make a similar declaration. It is reported that the Amerioan Government bas purohased the steamers Eturia and Umbria. President MoKinley's ultimatum has evoked a remarkable patriotic outburst throughout America. A number of persona have beoome i insane through over exoitement, while some have committed suicide. The House has passed a bill authorising the summoning of volunteers. April 21. The rumoured purohase by the Americans of the Cunard liners "Efcrucia and Umbria, as cruisers, is now officially denied.
