FIFTEEN PEOPLE KNOWN TO BE SAVED. [United Press Association.] LONDON, January 27. The steamer Matama has been totally wrecked near the Straitr of Magellan. A boat load containing fifteen, and others probably, have been saved. [The Mataura is a large oargo steamer flying the flag of the New Zoaland Shipping Company. She left Wellington on December 21st for London wiih a large cargo, chiefly of wool and meat. Messrs Scland<M-o & Co., are the NeUon agents, and the Mataura hai 463 bales of wool consigned horae by tbe firm. Sn tar as known the Mataura cariied 3 passengers on this trip. This important wreck will tend to render unpopular the winding Strait of Magellan as a short cut to avoid Cape Horn and its storms.]
