THE NATIVE LANDS BILL.
Tho Houso was occupied tho whole of Friday night with a rather heated discussion on tho Native Land Laws Amendment Bill, which aims a,t enabling Natives to redress grievances which it is i alleged were caused by erroneous legislation iv 1896 when the word "mortgage"' was slipped into the Native Land Bill then beforo tho Legislative Counoil. Ministers made a regular song about the Natives having been entrapped by a wealthy Wellington land owner and his solicitor, whilo Opposition members characterised the charge made as wild and reckless, and declared that they would be no party to repudiation or any action which would have the effect of defrauding bona-fido pm-chasers of advances made in good faith to natives.
