ARRIVAL OF THE TUTANEKAIL

Thene,w Government Bteamer Tutanekai, ; with Lord and Lady Glasgow and suite on board, arrived here this morning. She left Wellington on Monday night, and called at Hoton and the Pelorna Sound. After taking in^a supply of water at the Railway Wharf, she waß anohored in the stream, and will remain here until Satutday morning, when she proceeds to Westport. TheTulanekal is in command of Captain Faircbud, who speaks in high terms of the sea-going qualities of the steamer. Most of the Hinemoa's officers have been trasnl erred to the Tutanekai. The Tutanekiis ahandsomely-modelled steel twin-screw steamer, and was built and ehgined by Messrs David J. Dunlop and Co., engineers and shipbuilders, at the Inch Works, Port Glasgow, for the Government of New Zealand. Her dinieritions are :— Length (between perpendiculars , 205ft; breadth (moulded;, 30ft; depth (moulded), 15ft 9ic She has been huilt throughout of steel tu Lloyd's 100A1 class, under special survey, mid also fulfils the requirements of the Boud of Trade for passenger steamers. The steamer has been specially designed and constructed tor cable-laying . and repairing purposes, having two large circular cable tanks (one forward and one abaft of nmchiuery space) and all uects-sai-y appliances for cable-lifting, &0. . The interna, fittings and working gear are all up to date, aud were furnished by some vt the best makers. The outfit of the steamer lncludesa steam capstan windlass andbcrew steering gear, steam wincb'eß and steam steering gear, and a complete installation of electric lighting and bells. The whule of the cable gear and fittings is 'portable, and will only be carried when the vesael w actually engaged in telegraph work.. • The' -machinery consists of_ two sets of triple-expansion engines, having cylinders of 15Jin, 25inand 40in diameter, with a stroke of 30iu, and two marine tub lar single-euued boileis 131t lin diumeter x 10 ' feeFOW long. • There i» also a large auxiliary boiler. The whole of the maohinery has wen deslpuett for a working pressure of 1701b. The vessel carries four folly equipped boats, two of them being whale life-boats 35ft,iong, and they are all supplied with 'Hih's patent boai-disengaging tsear, for promptly lowering them into the water. Among tho'nauiical instruments are two of Lord Kelvin's patent compasses, and also one ot his talent sounding machines. On her trial trip the Tutanekai attained over 14 knots— above the contract speed. l'he steamer averaged .94 knots on her voy- ' age out to Hew Z aland, and her best day's run was 290 miles.
