MINING.
(From a Correspondent). Lyell, September 19. The manager of the Lyell Creek mine reports bh follows : The north drive has been driven a distance of 10ft for the week, making tho total distance driven on the reej 53ft. There is no change in the sizo of the reef, which is fully Bft wide, nor is their any change in tho quality of the stone since last report. The Cocksparrow dredge-maßter reports as follows : — Wo havo dredged 139 hours for a return of 46ozs lldwts 12grs of amalgam. Everything is working smoothly. The United Alpine mine manager's report is us follows : — -The No 9 lovel has been extended a further distance of 14ft, tho total distance driven by the contractors being 25ft. The reef is 2ft 6in wide, carrying gold. Thoro are indications of the reef widening. Tho stope at tho back of No. 9 continues without any noteworthy change. The reef is 14 inches wide and of fair quality. No 3 intermediate has been extended a further distance of Bft. No change is noticeabla. The track continues. I have suspended driving for the time being and started two men to connect with the No 1 lovel with an uprino of 14ft The No. 1 level has been extended a further distance of lift Gin. The country continues favourable. I have two men opening a chamber for the pump at No 9 level. I havo two mon laying tho main lino of three inch pipes from the battery. Tho contractors for the aerial line are making fair progress. Mr Cochrane, Inspector of Mines, visited the claim aud made a very careful inspection of the present workings below the No 7 level and he also wenf through tho pass from No 7 to No 6 level for the purpose of proving that communication oxistod between those two levels .
