GOLDEN BAY V. NELSON

The Nelson " probables " for the representative team met the Golden Hay reps at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, ground and weather being perfect for football. There were a fair number of spectators present, and to them the play was in cresting throughout, neither team having any special advantage. From a footballer's point of view the play was not up to " rep " form, for excepting occasional strong runs by C. Nesbitt, and some tricky work by Honar, and clover passing by G. Higgins, tho baok ploy was not what it Bhould be. All the forwards played a good hard game for Nelson, and got the ball out of the soiums oleverly, but the backs were lamentably slow in passing out. Against such a team as Taranuki the backs will need to pass much more smartly and avoid blind passing. It is no use passing wildly when no one is near to reoeivo the ball. The forwards, too, seem to have forgotten that dribbling is sometimes more effeotive than attempting to pick the ball up. In collaring again, an example was set to the local men by H. Riley, who took Nesbitt low and brought him down repeatedly. It is a pity that seme of Nelson's Jbest men cannot get away for the tour ; hut no doubt those who do go will do their best for the honour of the provinoe. And now os to the match with Golden Bay again. The ball had only been in play about five minutes when it was sent out to Bonar, playing left wing-three-quarter, and running strongly he scored near tho corner. Clear took the kick, but failed. Nelson 3 points, Golden Bay nil. On resuming both teams did good work, the advantage heing first with ono and then the othor, and once the visitors wero only prevented from scoring by a timely kick by Bird, the local ful] back. Ecclesfiold, Nalder, Sigley, Clear, and Krahagen, and G. Higgins, Nesbitt, unci Bonar were frequently conspicuous for Nelson, and on the -other side H. Riley,. Davidson, Sadd, Corby, Byrne, Campion, Fauchelle, and Trovolla wore prominent On one occasion Trevolla, who payed a fine game throughout, made a long dodgy run along the touch line, and very nearly scored. Half time sounded with tho acoro still Nelson 3 points, Golden Bay nil. The second spell was rather moro in favour of the local team, for whom Bonar scored ogam, and Clear failing to convert their score stood at 6 points. H. Riley, who played a grand game for the visitors, obtained a mark well within range, but Davidson made a feeble attempt nt goal. Several good runs were made by Riloy, to which Nesbitt and Bonar responded, but no further score was registered, and Nelson left tho field at tho finish victors by G points to nil. The usual cheers wero exchanged betweon the teams, and the gamo was played in the most friendly spirit. Mr Littlejohn officiated as referee.
