Fire in Wellington.

[United Preß3 Association.] Wellington, April '.28. At 11*30 last night the largest livery stables in Wellington, owned by Mr John Lane, and situated in Sydney street, ■were completely destroyed by fire. When discovered the'llameshad a linn hold, and aided by the inflammable nature of the contents of the building, spread with great rapidity. All the uorses were released and got out, but one slipped on the footpath, breaking its leg, and had to be destroyed. Two inmates had a narrow escape of losing their lives, only being saved by the promptitude and energy of Constable Price. The majority of the harness, feed, and appliances necessary in the management of an establishment of this kind were lost. The schoolroom nex t door was on fire, but was soon extinguised. The houses on the opposite sffle of the street had nu extremely narrow escape, much of the paint being burnt, and almost all of the glass broken. Lane has insurances amouuting to £1500 in Various oitices on the plant and feed, but the amount does not cover his loss, and the building, which was an old one, is the property of Mr Lockie, juu., and said to be insured for £500. The other buildngs were not much damaged. Had the wind heenfrom the opposite direction nothing could have saved Koss's Royal Hotel The Hon. Mr Seddon called on Mr Lane, expressing sympathy and offering his stable In which to place some of the horses and plant. Mr Seddon also arranged other stabling for Mr Lane.
