CIVIL SERVICE RETRENCHMENT.
To tue EniTjn ov the •' Eveming Mail." Sir, — Yonr correspondent "Thrift" ia evidently labouring under a grave misappre-< hension in regard to police administration in this district. He cannot be aware that not only the Provincial district of Nelson comes under the supervision of the Inspector, but also that of Marlborough, and, as compared with the administration in other places, our distriot is by far the most economical. The present Inspector is an old and deserving officer, and in the troublesome times, owing to Native disaffection, in the North Island, did honourable service for the State,- If '• Thrift " wants to ba thrifty, I will show him in tea minutea where £130,000 can be saved without touch** ing the salary of a single Civil servant. '■ Thrift." like a good many others, " straina at a gnat and swallows a camel." "Kindly hand the enclosed card to " Thrift " if he should wish to follow up the saving I hava incidentally referred to. Yours, &c, A. T. M. Aug. 19, 1890.
