PARLIA MENTARY ITEMS .
[ (From our own Correspondent.) Wr.LLiNCTOS, August IS, Ah hough the Civil Service Gla&silic'ition Bill will be found among- tbe slaughtered innocents when the acting* Premier makes his statement to morrow, it by no means follows that the Government have aban : oned their int'.-ntion of introducing* a short measure this session providing for the classification of tbe Postal and Telegrph Departments, A draft Bill will be submitted to Mr Ballance in a day or two, and, if his party offer no objection, it will be put through at once. | The compaot arrived at between Mr BaiI lance aud Mr Bryce, as representing the Government, has the support of members on both sides of the House, but. but, as might have been expected, Sir G. Grey declares that the bargain made is entirely unconstitutional, and he declares that the Government have gained everything they have been contending for while the Opposition gain has been absolutely nil, August 19. The Building Lien Bill is killed, the Labour Bills Committee having to-day decided to report that as an agreement had been come to that it do not proceed, tbey asked to be relieved from dealing with it. Dissatisfaction is expressed by members on both sides of the House with the arrangements as to the order of business. Minis-, terialists think it was the bounden duty of tbe Government to f urce the Supreme CgUrts Act Amendment Bill through -/ud thus provide for Judge Edwards' appointment. I learn that considerable misapprehension exists as to tho object; uf this Bill, which is not merely to make provision for the appointment of the latest addition to the Supreme Court bench, but to remove any doubts which may exist as to the legality of the appointment of Judges Williams and Richmond. If the Bill is not pressed on this session, Judge Edwards' salary will be provided for on tlie supplementary estimates, aud the new Parliament will be asked to confirm his elevation to the Bench.
