She took a glnss of milk in which strychnine had boon put for killing vermin. Timakx*. August 18. Dredging prospecting operations on the Hokitika river at Kanieri have eommonend. Twenty-three ounces of gold were obtained from a paddook 13 feet by 12 feet, although the main bottom waa not touched. In the Supreme Court to-day David Hastings Brown pleaded guilty to embezzling several sums belonging to the Bank of New Zealand, but said he had takeu the money to repay himself for £2000 he had spent in buying machinery for a flour mill, of which he was manager before it came into the Bank's possession. He was sentenced to twelve mouths hard labour.
