Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, AUGUST 18, 1890.

The wet Sunday appears to be be* coming a local institution, yesterday beiug tho fourth in succession. They arc generally followed by four or live days of perfect weather, but on Friday afternoon tho clouds begin to gather, and by Saturday night the downpour haa set in which is to make the Sunday a miserable day. If there is any consolation to be derived from the misfortunes of our neighbours — as some cynics appear to think —it may be a source of satisfaction to those who are grumbling at the four successive rainy Sundays that have been experienced in Nelson to know that in Wellington there have been no less than sixteen in. succession. Wk remind our readers of tho very ex« cellent concert that is to be given at the Boy.' College this evening, in which Mi*.

Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs? A criminal action for libel is beiug instituted by Ur Bell, Crown Prosecutor at Wellington, .gainst the Otago Workman, for strictures contained in au article on July 26 dealing with Judge Ward's appointment and the Agent Generalship. We havo been shown to-day „ se ti o£ bjx very beautiful photographs of some of the finest pictures shown al the reo .nt Dunedin Exhibition. They con.ist of Sir F. " The photographs will be on view this evening at the Misses Harris' exhibition ol paintings in the Shelbourne Btreet schoolroom. The leader is omitted to day to make room for a number of interesting items of news. The Wellington correspondent of the Ohristohurch Press writes :—'• Apropos to the Bank of New Zealand and Mr Hutchison's charges against the Government in relation to that institution, the following extract from a letter addressed by Sir It. Stout to the N. Z. Times, and published in tbat paper on the 22nd May ISSS (depr. cat ing tbe opposition offered by his party to the promised loan, and urging that they should support a desirable measure from whatever side it might come) is being quoted with much interest in the lobbies just now as showing how w.dey Sir Robert differs from his party on this as well a3 on other prominent questions : --" And now one word about the Bank of New Zealand, I. have no interest, direct or indirect, in this institution, Its member--, I believe, have always been politically opposed to me. But why should this colonial institution be criticised as it has been ? ft is, .1 believe, thoroughly sound anel strong. If it were weak it would pay tbis colony handsomely to strengthen it, even if it had to givo half a million moro ; but it is an institution of our own. and hence it must be abused, f hope the colonists will set their faces against this abuse of New Zealand and institution. — abuse tbat is to blame for half our depression."
