RETRENCHMENT.
To the Editor op the " Evening Mah,," Sib,— l have read daily the reports of the Skinflint Party in the House of Representatives on the retrenchment system, in reducing the salaries of officers who draw high salaries but work hard for it. For instance the city we live in, doing away with an officer such as tho Commissioner of Crown Lands, an officer that can ill be spared. If tho members of the Skinflint Party will turn their heads to another department, namely, the Police Department, in Nelson, they will see where a saving of £150 a year can be saved. We have an Inspector and two Sergeants to do tho work, which could well be done by one Sergeant. It has been dove in larger districts, and why not here I Why not strike out the Inspeo--tor's office . Thore would be a saving of £100 in salary and house rent £50, besides travelling expenses for him which are allowed him. Surely a saving can be made here, especially when we have a first-class Sergeant who is quite oapable of doing the work. Trusting you will insert this in your columns, — I am, &__., Thrift. Nelson, August 18, 1890. [Our correspondent should bear in mind that the Inspector's district iucludes not only Nelson but Marlborough.— Ed. N.E.M.}
