Dunbdin, June 7. The Otago branch of the Typographical Association has voted five guineas on behalf of the Petone Woollen Mills strikers. The wrestling match arranged between RO3S, the Amerioan champion, and Dunn takes place here early next month. Wellington, June 7. At the Supreme Court George Hill on a charge of obtaining indecent literature for distribution, was acquitted on the technical grounds that a similar charge against him had already been heard and dismissed by the Magistrate. A charge of rapß against a native named Tuhora will be taken on Monday and is expected to occupy two days. At tha annual meeting of the Licencing Committee the renewal of a lioense to Mrs Cownaend, ot the PieriHotel, was refused, on the ground that a house frequented by seafaring men should not ba oonduoted by a woman. Auckland, June 7. A nice legal paint was raised yesterday in the trial of Edmund George for carnally knowing a girl under fourteen. The defence was that he had reasonable grounds for believing her to be over fourteen. The jury returned a verdiot of "Guilty," but the Judge disagreed. Mr Tole for the defence urged that the Judge as the Court could override the jury'B verdict under the provision of laat year's Aot in regard to " reasonable belief," which says ; " If in the opinion of the Court or jury the prisoner &c." Mr Justice Conolly reserved the point for the Court of Appeal. Invercakgill, June 7. The native mutton birders returned to Riverton yesterday in the steamer Kakanui which encountered very rough weather and prolonged a four dayB 1 passage to one of a fortnight. The mutton bird season has been the beat for years, and the take is not far short of 100,000 birds.
