THE COMET.

To The Edi-tor of the " Evening Mail," Sir,— The comet reported by telegram from Sydney has been visible ia Nelson for at least the last two nights. Aa first reported, it waa to the northward of , and not very far from, the Southern Cross, and so passed almost overhead here about sunset. So far as position goes, therefore, it is very favourably situated for observation. But it is inconspicuous, looking, to the naked eye, like a small star through a light haze, Comparing its position last night with that given, in the telegram, it wonld appear to have a pretty rapid motion towards tht north-eastward. If so, it is approaching the neighbourhood of tht bright star Spica, but should pass some degrees to the eastward of it.—- 1 am, &c, M.
