POLICE COURT.
[Before A. Turnbull Esq., R.M.I George White, late superintendent of the Lunatio ABylum, was oharged with embezzling £1 4s received from Major Erskine, £6 10b reoeived from Mr Joseph Pidgeon ; and £4 10s reoeived from Mr Colin Campbell. Mr Fell conducted the examination, and Mr Hartey appeared for the defenoe. Major Erskine : In Ootober last I bought two piga from the aooused. The receipt produced was given to me by his wife. It ia in the handwriting of the accused. Joseph Pidgeon : I have a son, an inmate of the Asylum. I have paid the charges made from time to time. I prodaoe a receipt bearing the signature of the accused for £6 10a. James Morrison : I succeeded the accused as superintendent of the Asylum. It is tbe duty of the superintendent to keep the books, to render accounts for moneys due cm aooount of patients and for produce Bold, to give receipts, and to aocountj to the Government. I produca the cash book and maintenaooa ledger. There is no prodnos account kept in fch» ledger ; that is only reoorded in fche cash book. The maintenance account of in mates is entered in both cash book and ledger. There is no entry for the Bale of two pigs to Major Erekino for £1 4s, nor does the item appear in the bank book. It ia tbe duty of the superintendent to pay all moneys be receives into the Bank twice a weak. The receipt given to Major Erekine does nob coma oat of the official receipt book. The sum of £6 10a paid by Mr Pidgeon does not appear either in the cash book or the Bank book, and the receipt! does not come out of the official book. The sum of £i 10s has not been brought to credit in uny of the books ia February or Maroh, 1889. Cross-examined : There is no separate entry for ££ 10s in February or Maroh. We pay into the Bank what money we have in baud in one sum. We don'b pay in eaoh receipt separately. Re-examined : There is no entry in the receipt book for £4 10s. The accused was remanded until Wednesday next.
