The Winter Evening Debating Society held its Ufual fortnightly meeting last night, when there wqg a gor,d attendance. The subjeol; was " Tbat the Volunteer system is worthy of our snpport," Mr Joynt opening in the affirmative and Mr J. H. Harkneas leading the opposition. The weaknesses and strength of the system were very freely discussed, and at the close of the debate the division showed a majority of favor of the proposition. In his recent budget speech, Mr Goschen, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, bore testimony to the yd vantages of tradesmen liberally advertising their wares, Speaking of the " sober beverages," ho said:—" Coffee j maintains its character of dull uniformity. Cocoa has yielded £6000 more, but coffee £2000 less than in 1887-8. Coffee will not move. (Laughter.) Some of the experts give an extraordinary and not uninteresting explanation. They say that cocoa has actually been puffed into its more satisfactory position, by the energy of ambitious advertisers. (Laughter.) While tea also enjoys with cocoa a vast amount of advertisement, somehow or other coffee has been neglected in this respect. The result is tbat coffee is dull and never will yield even the small increase in the estimate, notwithstanding the increase of population."

Tho dream mado such an impression on his mind that he mentioned it to his brother, who laughingly told several of his shipmates of it. Mr D. M.
