Invekcabgili,, October 16. At the Police Court to-day John B. Vernon, quarter-master of the Hauroto was committed for trial on a charge of attempting to murder Norman McDonald harbor-master of the Blufif on the 6th September by trying to throw him over the wharf. The accused, for whom Mr Solomon appeared, reserved his defence the evidence for the prosecution was very conflicting. Westport, Octotober 10. The men engaged to work at the Ngakawau mine yesterday declined to commence at the rate agreed viz : 8s per day, requiring 10s. The men are acting with the Denniston Coal Miners Union. George Meares for assault with intent to commit rape was committed to the District Court, Timard, October 16. A suit to decide n question of liability of Charitable Aid Boards under section 74 of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act is now proceeding betweon the Otago Benevolent InstiUnion, plaintiffs, and thegSouth Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, defen* dants. A female pauper with two children who had been on the hands ol the defendants for about a year, left for Otago in May, 1887, The Otago Board claim 10s per week from the defendants for her maintenance since then. The defendant Boards had paid 10s a week for six months under an agreement between the two Chairmen, and will now dispute on several grounds their alleged liability to pay for any longer term. Some

[From our own Correspondent.! Reefton, October 15. Dr Sehleide], a scientist, and Mr Spratt of Auckland, representing the New Zealand Gold Extraoting Company, who are the proprietors of the Newbery Vautin Ohlorination process are here, examining the quartz tailings. They are prepared to ereot the necessary plant if terms can be arranged with the proprietors of the mines. If successful in doing 80 it will cauee a great revolution in the system of treatment of ores here.
