OPENING OF THE BOATING SEASON.
On Saturday afternoon the boating season ?;as formally u^ened by tho Nelson and Wakatu Bowing Clubs. Owing to the ptrong south wester th.it prevailed, tho procession of b'atswas a very tprne affair, the Nelson Club not having boats calculated to withstand »he weather, manned Ihe pilot boat, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr Low ; while ihs Wakatu Club sported a wbaleboat and wo gigs, thus limiting the proe? Bsion to four boa!s, instead of 13 or 14 which would have taken part had tho weather been favorable. After tho procession tho members and their frienda adjourned to the Pilot shed, where refreshments had been prepared for them by Mesdames Cock and Pitt. The President of the Wakatu Club (Mr Cock) then presented the trophies won by that Club during last season. These consisted of a pair of sculls with cable entwined and mounted on a velvet shield, and which had been won by H. Batchelor, J. W. Webster, A. Giblin, and G. Johuston : and prizes presented by the cap* tain of the Wakatu Club (Mr Trask) embrn, n ng gold wa'cb. pendants of crossed sculls and rowlocks, won by W. Johnston, J, Low. F. Johnston, and A. C. Scott. Cheers wer<a then given for Mrs Cock and Mrs Pitt who had so kindly provided the good things — for the ladies, of whom a good number had assembled—for the winners of the trophies— also for the Harhor Master, who had placed his boat and shed at the disposal of the Club?.
