In honor of his silver wedding day, whioh occurred on April 11, Sir Morell Mackenzie hai received from the German Emperor a very beautiful basket of flowers adorned with three long silk ribbons— that on the right purple, and adorned with the portrait ,of the Emperor ; that on the left light blue, with the portrait of the Empress and Her Majesty's monogram in gold ; the middle one golden, colored, and inscribed " Morell Mackenzie," with the dates 11, 4, 1888, and 11, 4, 1913, a graceful expression of the hope that he will live to celebrate his golden wedding. The letters and figures are beautifully embroidered, and surrounded by branches of laurel and myrtle worked in silver and gold respectively. The basket was accompanied by an autograph letter of thanks for the "faithful services rendered to the Emperor." Mr Bram Stoker says that Mr Irving's gross takings during his present season in America will aggregate more than 400,000 dol. The present engagement of Mr Irving at the Star Theatre comprises the last five weeks of a twenty week 'season in America so thab it will be seen that his busines averages 20,000d0l a week. Mr Irving said sometime ago his percentage of profit on his gross receipts was only about 20 per cent., but even at this rate his personal income , from his Americau tour will be 80,000dols. This, of courso, is a considerable sum of money, but, in view of the large and' expensive Company he takes over, and the enormous expenditure he incurs for transporting a large company and the scenery, the amount is certainly not excessive. It is said that his salary list is 6000 dol a week. He has about 100 people whose fares he pays to and from England at firstclass rates, and even the minor members of .the company are fairly skilful players,, drawing somewhat more than living salaries. In the House of Commons the other day (says the London correspondent of the Press) Captain Cotton called attention to the dishonest practice prevailing of butchers selling imported frozen meat as English meat, and asked whether something could not be done to- stop the swindle. Sir M. Hicks-Beaoh'a reply was not very encouraging, for he only believed, though he was not sure, that the butcher might be prosecuted under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act of 1885. Still an attempt might be made to work on the suggestion, and certainly Canterbury men are more interested in the matter than anybody else. If once security could be obtained that New Zealand mutton would always be sold under its proper designation, its price would soon go up. As matters stand it is sold as Southdown, and the butcher pockets the whole profit. On the other hand mutton from the River Plate, the Falkland Islands, and Australia, is sold as New Zealand mutton, and the reputation of the latter suffers. If each description of mutton had its due, the householder would eagerly enquire after New Zealand mutton, and would cease to be disappointed by having inferior joints palmed off upon him. The committee of the Christohurch Chamber of Commerce in their quarterly report make the following reference to the "State of Trade " : — "It would ecaroely be correct to state that the trade in the colony is in a patisfactory condition, but owing to the prudence and economy exercised by the com* munity generally trade in the main is fairly sound, and for the past quarter there have been few important failures. It is true that certain critics in England continue to decry colony, but to those who look below the surface it must be apparent that New Zealand continues to make material progress, and that it has not Buffered so much from the almost universal wave of depression that has swept over the. trade of the world as most other countries have done. We find the value of wool and frozen meat has recently improved, and this year will show a large accession to our exports of wheat aud dairy produce as compared with the previous two years, There is also a manifest revival in mining interests, and it is safe to predict that before this time aext year a considerable amount of both capital and labour, will be employed upon both quartz and alluvial mining. Money also continues to be plentiful for both trade purposes and for permanent investment, so that on the whole the outlook for the future is fairly bright, while if anything like a revival took place in the value in Europe of our staple products our past troubles would shortly be a thing of the past; " From a copy to hand of the English and American Register— an English paper published in Germany — we (tost) see that Mr J. W. Hill was one of the soloists at a concert given by the Anglo-American Choral Society of Leipzig, on the 20th March. In its commentary on the vocalists, the Register ■says :— " Mr F. Hill sang Balfe's ' Come into the garden, Maud. ' with great feeling. Possessed., of a pure and remarkably clear tenor voice, he has. good prospects before him should he devote himself to music as a profession, for such a timbre is now too rarely heard. " Mr Hill also sang the same song on the 13th April at the Leipzig Abendunterhaltung, and it is noteworthy that besides being the first Englishman who has been permitted to sing an English song at these concerts, two of the artistes who assisted the same evening were Miss Doyle of Sydney, and Ernest Hutohinson (the Australian Mozart), of Melbourne, bo that the colonies, were well represented.
