LAST NIGHT TELEGRAMS.
Wellington, June 6. Mr JHenry Halse, an ex-Judge ®f the Native Lands Court, died rather suddenly last night from heart disease. He was 69 years of age. Auckland, June 6. A Victorian syndicate proposes to purohase the kauri forests and sawmills. Their company will find one million pounds as capital, of whioh £500,000 to £750,000 is to be spent in buying out the present bush and mill proprietors. It is intended that nearly the whole of the working up of the timber shall be done here. From 2,000 to 3,000 hands are at present employed in^the timber industry involving an annual* expenditure in wages of from £175,000 to £200,600. The company's operations will extend over a larger area, and the number of men engaged will be increased. Mr Blair senior, of Melbourne, and Mr G. Holdihip will act as managers for the' syndicate for tke present.
