Very satisfactory news is contained in to-day's cablegrams with regard to the wool market. The competition, especially among 1 foreign buyers; is keen, and the consequence is that there is a rise of a penny in the price of greasy wool. Should this be maintained it will prove an immense boon to New Zealand, and go far towards removing the depression whioh has so long prevailed in this colony in common with other parts of the world. In view of the approaohing se sion of the British Parliament, which will open this month, we publish an extract from a speech recently i elivered by Air Gojchen at Manchester whioh gives some idea of the enormous amount of work that it before Parliament-, owing to tho obs ructions placed in tho way of legit-htion in tha last pession. Tho speed', which U an exceedingly interesting and able one, will be founcl on tho fourth page. A correspondent writes from Richmond: — As a further proof of the caution needed in dealing with fire at this season of the year, when the grass is scorched by the late drying winds together with the drought, we had I am sorry to e&y ample evidence on Saturday last at Richmond Park. It would appear that on the afternoon of that day several race horses were being exercised on the course. One of the la ! s who was riding at the time incautiously struck a match and threw it on the ground, the consequence being that the grass quickly ignited, and fanned by the strong sea breeze blowing at time rapidly spread. Unfortunately the united efforts of those present failed to stop ithe progress of the flames, which speedily spread in evepy direction. The firebell was rung and the mfinibprs of the Richmond Fire Brigade with theij; engine were promptly on the scene of action. Fortunately a plentiful supply of water was near, and the fire was subdued, but not before an acre of grass had been burnt, and from 1 to 5 chains of the hedge bounding the park on. the western side had been com* pletely destroyed. Had a sou' wester been blowing at the time of tha accident the result would hare probably been disastrous, With a strong wind from that direction tho plantation on the northern side of the park must certainly have caught fire, and. this

would have endangered the picturesque Grand .Stand lately erected. The. thanks therefore of the Jockey Club and the lessee, Mr Moßae, will, I feel sure, be cordially offered to the Brigade for their prompt action, and efforts in preventing any more serious loss. Messrs Bialey Brothers & Go. will hold their next aale of cattle at Suburban North to-morrow at 2 30.
