Disastrous Shipwreck.
Nearly Forty Lives Lost, Melbourne, October 20. It is reported here that the steamer Cheviot, belonging to Messrs Howard Smith & Sons, which sailed from this port yesterday afternoon for Sydney and Brisbane, was wrecked outside the Heads near Point Nepen last evening. The Cheviot, on leaving here, had eleven saloon and twenty-two steerage passengers. Later. News bas been received from Sorrento that one of tbocucw of tho Cheviot reaohed | that place ai. 240 this morning. He states that tho vessel struck on a rook about one (?) last evening. He jumped into the water and succeeded in getting ashore. It is Burmised at Queenscliffe that the steamer broke down in a southerly gale. On the news becoming known the crews of the lifeboats proceeded to the scene of the disaster and set up the life saving apparatus, by means of which a number of persons were safely landed from the vessel. This morning it is evident that the ship is breaking up, as the cargo is coming ashore,
Queensompkb, 9 a.m. A fishing boat has just arrived here from Portsea bringing the news that 24 persons have been saved from the Cheviot, and that be» tween 35 and 40 are supposed to have been drowned.
